THE EVENTS IN the Caribbean hardly went unnoticed in America, even before Thomas Jefferson was elected and was able to complete the Louisiana Purchase. The grim spectacle of slaves humiliating and murdering large numbers of their white owners powerfully concentrated the attention of American slave owners.
